LT005: TOM EXCELL (NUBIYAN TWIST)

This week’s guest mix comes from Nubiyan Twist guitarist and producer Tom Excell.

The Leeds/London 12-piece have received much acclaim for their colourful and energetic fusion of afrobeat, soul, hip-hop, dub, jazz and everything that falls in between. It’s no surprise that the band’s expressed ambition is "to encourage artistic and social unity between different cultures and musical styles".

In true fashion, Excell’s selection in this exclusive mix reflects the melting pot of melody and rhythm that is Nubiyan Twist. Tracks come from high-profile legends such as King Tubby and the ever-relevant Flying Lotus, but also from lesser-known artists whose inclusion alongside the big players sounds anything but out of place.

Excell melds together a number of complex rhythms and styles into wholesome and seamless production, and it’s clear that his primary aim is to make you move your feet, nod your head, or, at the very least, tap a finger.

Having released their self-titled debut record on Wormfood Records last year to warm reception from the likes of The Independent and Mojo, as well as receiving airplay on 1Xtra and 6Music, Nubiyan Twist are definitely one to keep tabs on.
