PREMIERE: OCTO CHAMP - SOUTHERN UPLANDS (SHAPES OF RHYTHM)
Following March’s Not Quite Here Yet EP, Glasgow-based Octo Champ returns with his second four track EP of club-ready heat, Southern Uplands. The third release on the recently established Shapes of Rhythm label, this one’s littered with samples from across the musical globe. Conga rhythms, funk guitar, soul vocals, what have you. It’s a proper hip shaker.
Octo Champ, aka Nathan Smith, has already established himself across South East London’s club scene, orchestrating the dance at parties from Corsica Studios to the Bussey Building. Smith also keeps himself busy as one half of DJ/promoter duo Rigid Disco, throwing parties at Canavan’s Pool Hall in Peckham and back up in Glasgow. Production credits include remixes for Flamingods and CHPLN, as well as the well received Not Quite Here Yet 12-inch on Let’s Go Swimming records earlier this year. Not Quite Here Yet received major exposure from Thump and DJ Mag, while Shapes of Rhythm have likewise been given support from Gilles Peterson, Tom Ravenscroft and Dom Servini.
We’ve been given the exclusive premiere of ‘CMI’, the second track on Southern Uplands. The track perfectly exhibits Smith’s sample-led production approach. A low-slung, slightly off-kilter beat pushes along underneath a medley of kalimba samples and synth stabs. It’s a much simpler affair than the rest of the EP, but a diamond nonetheless. Octo Champ plays at Kelburn Garden Party in July, and you can stay up to date on all things Rigid Disco here.
Southern Uplands is out on 30th June on Shapes of Rhythm.
