Interview: Space Dimension Controller

JIBBA JABBA INTERVIEW WITH
SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER

DECEMBER 16

WORDS BY RORY CONNAUGHTON & KENZA LONG
PRODUCTION BY KENZA LONG

Episode 002 of Jibba Jabba features galactic-funk specialist Space Dimension Controller in conversation with Kenza Long. They discuss his new album Orange Melamine, released in May 2016 on Ninja Tune. Raw and uncut, dug out from his bedroom at the humble age of 18, it's as lo-fi as it gets. This is the cultured producer’s fourth studio album, and with previous releases on Royal Oak and the legendary R&S Records, he was an easy contender for JABBA.

For JABBA’s third instalment they went bigger across the board, drawing for SDC at 400-capacity comedy club Komedia – cinema by day, basement by night – adhering to JABBA’s policy of constantly switching up the venue. The layout of Komedia allowed JABBA to finally exhibit the trippy set of visuals that it had slowly been teasing since its launch on St. Paddy’s Day.

Whilst SDC is renowned for his heavy use of synths and niche sampling (from old school VHS tapes of The Fifth Element to interviews with the original cast of Ghostbusters), it was a completely different ball game at Komedia. Much like previous JABBA headliner Mall Grab, SDC’s sets are always unrehearsed and fun-focused. The Belfastian completely read the floor, spinning from Trance classic ‘Ayla’, to Talking Heads’ ‘This Must Be The Place’ – say no more.

For its fourth edition this Friday, 2nd December, JABBA are backing two more Brighton debuts with lo-fi favourites Raw M.T. and Ross From Friends, at the underground seafront venue, MONO. The event is somewhat of a Lobster Theremin showcase, shooting in Lobster front runner Raw M.T. from Venice and celebrating the launch of Ross From Friends’ long-awaited huge release You’ll Understand, which drops that very day on the bubbling British label.

These two are a pair of very unique and dedicated beatmakers; Ross From Friends in particular has had a huge year and was just nominated for breakthrough producer of 2016 in the UK DJ Awards. The night will see an extended set from RAW M.T. and a live set from RFF, no doubt ensuring another organic morning of house and techno to see JABBA out into the new year.

Get down to Brighton for JABBA Presents: RAW M.T. and Ross From Friends on Friday 2nd December. More info here.
