SOUND OF '17: NUBYA GARCIA
Having performed with everyone from Kiko Bun to Yussef Kamaal and as an integral part of jazz ensemble, Nérija, Nubya Garcia is fast becoming a household name on the London jazz scene. She brings her own style, perspective and sound to her playing that encapsulates the diverse influences that have defined the new wave of jazz sweeping across the UK today.
We’ve not been able to get enough of last year’s self-titled Nérija EP; her composition ‘For You’ is a fresh soulful display of Nubya’s penchant for melody and the EP is an amalgamation of the band’s many influences. Check out Nérija’s heavy guest playlist selection that they put together for us back in September. Nubya’s duties for newcomers Maisha are also not to be missed - adding fire to their driving sound. 2017 will see her record more with these outfits and we can’t wait for what will come.
Nubya has already started 2017 with a bang having just finished recording a Jazz Re:freshed 5ives LP, featuring a heavy lineup of musicians including Femi Koleoso, Moses Boyd, Sheila Maurice-Grey, Joe Armon-Jones, Theon Cross, and Daniel Casimir. Furthermore, Nubya was recently awarded the Steve Reid Foundation prize that has seen the likes of Sarathy Korwar and Moses Boyd being mentored by Floating Points, Four Tet and Emanative. This will be her chance to delve into writing and gigging with live electronics building on her first explorations into this field with the Theon Cross Trio. We had the privilege of having Nubya spin tunes at our 1st birthday late last year and the eclecticism of Nubya’s tastes suggests that we can expect something truly spectacular.
To top it all off, rumour has it Nubya will also be doing some arrangements for large ensemble. Do these musicians ever stop? A busy year ahead for an artist of the highest calibre.
