Sound of '17: Maisha
SOUND OF '17: MAISHA
We first saw Maisha at one of the Good Evening shows held at The Royal Albert in New Cross, and were truly blown away. Comprising a selection of South East London’s finest musicians, this outfit is a firm favourite at LT.
Drummer Jake Long leads the project, which channels the lineage of spiritual jazz, taking inspiration from Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane and John Coltrane. The band then fuse the package with West African and Afro-beat rhythms, courtesy of Long and percussionist Tim Doyle. Twm Dylan keeps the groove alive on double bass, Shirley Tetteh kills it on rhythm and lead guitar, Amané Suganami brings the heat on keys and Nubya Garcia delivers sax hooks that replay in your head for days. In 2016 Maisha released a live recording of a Good Evening show on Jazz:Refreshed, Welcome To The New Welcome, translating the band’s energy in its most organic form.
Maisha are an absolute delight. With fresh material lined up and plans to go into the studio, we can’t wait to see, hear and feel more in 2017.
